The Space Between Minds

Exploring how intelligence emerges, adapts, and evolves—within and between minds.

Research

We investigate which principles of intelligence generalise across living and artificial systems—and which depend on a system's body, environment, and history.

Abstract blue membranes unfurling into new folds and fine strands, evoking open-ended emergence.

How do systems form goals, adapt, and develop new capabilities?

We investigate how goal-directed behaviour arises and develops in living and artificial systems. Artificial-life models and evolutionary approaches provide ways to study adaptation, the emergence of new capabilities, and the conditions for open-ended learning.

Selected publications

Work by Olaf Witkowski and collaborators that informs the lab's research programme. These publications predate NOOMA Labs.

The lab

NOOMA Labs is being established in Kyoto as an independent research laboratory, continuing and extending the scientific direction of Cross Labs (opens in a new tab).

Our programme connects foundational questions about agency, cognition, and adaptation with new approaches to learning, collective intelligence, and computation.
